What Were They Wearing?!
According to Vogue.com, this year’s 2019 MET Gala theme “Camp: Notes on Fashion“, is based on Susan Songtag’s 1964 essay, “Notes on Camp“. In her essay Songtag writes, “The essence of Camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.” How fitting for the Metropolitan’s Museum of Art’s seventy-year-old fundraising gala. The gala occurs annually on the first Monday in May, and serves to celebrate the opening of the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition.
Each year’s theme presents the perfect vehicle for fashion’s top brands to come up with the most whimsical, amplified and elaborate frocks, designed specifically for the hand-picked guest list selected by Editor-In-Chief, Anna Wintour herself. A celebration of art and fashion, your favorite celebs spend months working with designers to come up with the night’s most newsworthy looks. While most looks this year were over the top and in true camp fashion, others lacked that special spark that could have pushed them into a captivating charm.
This year’s looks also proved to connect, build and make moves, as several entertainers added a theatrical touch to their outfits. Lady Gaga, a co-host for the night’s festivities, gave us a 12-minute entrance, complete with multiple wardrobe changes that started out with a pink exaggerated overcoat, and ended up stripped down to a glittery bralette, shorts and fishnets. Billy Porter was carried onto the red carpet by six golden muscular men as an Egyptian king, and revealed golden wings that spanned 10-feet. The sweetest outfit of the night was worn by Zendaya who became a real-life Cinderella on the red carpet, complete with a light up ball gown and glass slippers; one of which she lost ascending up the gala stairs in search of her prince. Janelle Monae’s outfit just winked at us ; )
